Our Head Greenkeeper Russell has just returned from Sawgrass where he was one of a number of volunteers helping the 60 full-time ground-staff keep the course in top condition for the 2018 Players Championship.

During his time there, Russell's main morning duty was 'back-tracking' the tees by hand. This is a process of cutting one way and returning down the same line so that there is no striping on the tees. In the evenings his role was to check the moisture content within the greens which had to lie in the 14% - 16% range. Areas that fell below this level were flagged so that a small amount of water could be added. Other evening jobs included ironing greens, repairing divots and hand-watering dry areas on the fairways.

On the final day, which coincided with Mother's Day in the US, you may have noticed that the plants around the 17th green and the iconic tree had been changed from yellow and white to pink. In all 26,000 plants were planted that evening making it a particularly late one for the team!

Russell would like to thank Hale Golf Club club for giving him the opportunity of a life time - one which he will never forget.

The linked video gives some idea of the scale of the operation but feel free to ask Russell about the experience when you next see him:
